Come with Base Game, The Fair Youth Expansion & Strange Shadows Expansion

Publisher: Side Room Games

Designer: John Kean

Description:

In Black Sonata board game you will find yourself in Shakespeare's London, circa 1600, in pursuit of the shadowy Lady. A specially ordered deck of cards determines her hidden movements from place to place. You must deduce her location and then intercept her to catch a glimpse and gain a clue to her identity. You will need several clues to deduce her identity, but with each clue gained the Lady becomes harder to track. Black Sonata combines hidden movement and logical deduction into a unique solitaire steeped in literary history.

The Fair Youth expansion adds an additional deduction task to the game: you must discover where in London the Fair Youth is hiding. Bystanders will give you a clue for which way the Youth went from your current location, but if you are already at his actual location you will be told a lie. Deduce his location to surprise him there, or for extra points catch him and the Dark Lady together, unmasking them both at the same time.

Strange Shadows is a collection of optional expansions that can be played on their own or mixed together, including with the earlier Fair Youth expansions. The Darkest Ladies replaces the Dark Lady cards with suitless versions, so you must deduce her symbols in the correct order, while Indirections adds stealth cards that reveal either the compass direction she traveled or the possible colour of her current location. Blazonry hides her behind a heraldic shield whose symbols you must deduce using special fog cards. The Ferryman lets you travel instantly between riverside locations, but the ferryman protects the Dark Lady from searches at those spots and forces you to collect location cards in a set order. Cat and Mouse turns the game into an asymmetric two-player contest, with one player as the Dark Lady and the other as the Historian trying to unmask her. Tarry cards let you temporarily pause her flight to catch up, at a later cost, and four extra fog cards with beneficial effects can be used to enlarge the fog deck, replace the base game’s detrimental fog cards, or randomly swap in more variety.
